From the Desk of the Executive Director: February 2014
Dear MAAE Membership,
To us all…A grand and arts-filled 2014!
Our new board is energetic and talented under the guidance of our Executive Board members, President Daisha Walker (Perkinston), Past President V.A. Patterson (Jackson), President- Elect Brenda Jones (Madison), and At-Large Members Gloria Johnson (Meridian) and MacKenzie Stroh (Greenville). This month we highlight some of these committed members. Our focus continues in the areas of Advocacy through Arts and Literacy, Advocacy through Professional Development, and Advocacy through Communication and Capacity.MAAE faces an issue that requires our concerted voice, involvement, and contributions, which are key to our continuous growth as an organization-now more than ever before.
Please review new criteria from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) that will be required for membership in the KCAAEN, effective January 1, 2015:
A State Alliance will:
1. Have a mission statement that has arts education as a major focus.
2. Maintain status as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) with the IRS.
3. Represent the relationship with the Kennedy Center, KCAAEN, and National Leadership Committee (NLC) in a professional and positive light in all public statements and organizational literature.
4. By October 1 of each year submit a State Profile Form to the Kennedy Center which includes the following:
a. Federal Form 990 for the most recent fiscal year, proving at least $40,000 in gross cash receipts, which may not include in-kind contributions;
b. Contact information for at least two individuals who are primarily responsible for operating the State Alliance (i.e., the Executive Director and Board Chair) including role with Alliance, address, phone, fax, and email address. The Kennedy Center recommends that each State Alliance maintains one paid staff member of at least a 0.5 FTE. Kennedy Center staff and NLC members will revisit this recommendation in 2016;
c. List of your statewide Board of Directors, with Board positions held, and each Board member’s full address, email, and phone contact information. The Kennedy Center recommends that each State Alliance maintains a Board of Directors of at least five members. Kennedy Center staff and NLC members will revisit this recommendation in 2016;
d. Calendar of all board and committee meeting dates, times, and locations for the current fiscal year or from September 1 – August 31; and
e. Documented State Alliance activities and accomplishments in arts education during the previous year that demonstrate a statewide impact and that align with the KCAAEN mission and the purpose of State Alliances.
For MAAE, the area of challenge is 4a. SO…MAAE’s fund-raising goal is $25,000. We need your imagination, creativity, and innovative ideas NOW! Please share any fundraising ideas, as well as names of organizations and/or individuals you are willing to contact for sponsorships, donations, and/or membership.
