Althea Jerome has worked in the field of arts education (music, drama, literature) throughout her career. With work experience in K-12 public schools, university, community arts organizations, national and statewide arts and education organizations, she has continuously pursued the importance of arts learning. She is a teaching artist who is listed in Southern Artistry, an artist roster hosted by South Arts, and in the Teaching Artist Roster of the Mississippi Arts Commission. As a lifelong musician, Althea recognizes the many ways music enriches the lives of students and engages them in learning. Her work as a teaching artist emphasizes arts integration and ways to weave music into all content areas. She offers demonstration lessons and professional development for teachers in workshops and school settings, emphasizing arts integration and interdisciplinary instruction. In the Whole Schools Initiative she has served as Field Advisor and has presented workshops and Curriculum Tracks at the annual summer institute. She directed a multi-year project, hosted by MAAE, to train teaching artists through a Dana Foundation grant, and most recently, to train TAs for the Arts in Academics Program. Throughout her career she has served in volunteer leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels in music and arts education organizations.
